Hot PPI Inflation Shakes Stocks, but Treasury Yields and Semiconductors Signal a Shift

October 15, 2026 | Trading the Close Market Review | Drew Dosek

Hot inflation data was supposed to put additional pressure on stocks Thursday. Instead, the market delivered a different message. Treasury yields moved lower, major indexes recovered from early weakness, and semiconductor stocks staged an important intraday reversal.

That does not mean the selling is over. It means the market's response to the inflation report deserves more attention than the report itself.

During Thursday's Trading the Close, Verified Investing Pro Trader Drew Dosek focused on the disconnect between the morning's Producer Price Index (PPI) release and the price action that followed. With technology stocks already under pressure from weakness in Asian markets, the session presented an important test of whether sellers could maintain control.

By the closing bell, the S&P 500 had gained 0.28%, while the NASDAQ finished 0.08% higher. Those modest gains concealed a more constructive recovery beneath the surface.

The question heading into the next session is whether that recovery can develop into sustained buying or whether Thursday's strength was simply a bounce within a vulnerable market.

Hot PPI Inflation Sends a Different Message Through Treasury Yields

The Producer Price Index came in significantly hotter than expected, with the reported reading nearly twice the consensus forecast. Ordinarily, an upside inflation surprise would raise concerns about the Federal Reserve's ability to lower interest rates, potentially putting upward pressure on Treasury yields.

Yet the 10-year Treasury yield moved sharply lower.

That divergence became one of the day's most important developments. Rather than assume the inflation report would dictate the market's direction, Drew focused on what the yield chart had already been showing.

The previous session produced a pronounced upper wick on the daily candle, suggesting that buyers had struggled to sustain higher yields. Drew also identified what he calls a sleeper hold pattern across the daily and weekly timeframes, adding technical weight to the possibility of a reversal.

The next downside level to monitor is 5.021%. A continued decline toward that area would reinforce the reversal setup, while a recovery in yields would require traders to reassess the outlook.

The broader significance extends beyond bonds. Lower Treasury yields can ease valuation pressure on growth stocks and other interest-rate-sensitive areas of the market. That relationship helps explain why technology shares were able to recover despite the inflation surprise, although yields alone do not establish the cause of the rebound.

The lesson is straightforward: economic data provides context, but the market's reaction helps determine whether that information is actually changing price behavior.

S&P 500 and NASDAQ Recover, but Key Resistance Still Matters

The major indexes entered Thursday under pressure following weakness in South Korean technology stocks and another difficult session for semiconductor shares. The early selling suggested that the prior day's weakness might continue.

Instead, buyers defended important technical areas.

The S&P 500 remains within a broader consolidation that has developed since August. Despite the recent volatility, the index has not decisively broken the structure that supported its earlier advance.

Drew highlighted an important trend line that held during Thursday's session. That defense keeps the near-term bullish case alive, but it does not yet establish a fresh breakout.

SPY Technical Levels: 766.17 Support and 781 Resistance

For traders following the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), the key downside reference is \$766.17. A daily close below that area would weaken the current setup and suggest that sellers are regaining control.

On the upside, \$781 remains the more important confirmation level. A sustained daily close above that resistance would strengthen the case for a move toward the psychologically important \$800 area.

The distinction between holding support and breaking resistance matters. Buyers have demonstrated a willingness to defend the range, but they still need to prove they can push price beyond its upper boundary.

Until that happens, the market remains in consolidation rather than a confirmed new leg higher.

NASDAQ and QQQ: Trendline Recovery Supports the Bullish Case

The NASDAQ also showed improvement beneath its relatively flat closing performance.

The index recovered above a declining trend line associated with its earlier breakout structure. However, an ascending trend line extending from the March lows remains overhead, with the 27,000 area serving as a potential technical destination.

The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) offers another constructive development. Drew identified a recovery above both a prior breakout trend line and the neckline of an inverse head and shoulders pattern.

That formation carries a measured-move objective near \$806, provided the breakout structure remains intact.

For now, the recovery is encouraging. The next test is whether buyers can maintain control above the reclaimed neckline and work through overhead resistance without another sharp reversal.

Semiconductor Stocks Stage a Key Reversal as SMH Tests Resistance

If Treasury yields provided the day's macro divergence, semiconductors offered the clearest example of changing intraday behavior.

The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) finished approximately 1% lower, underperforming the broader market. Looking only at that closing loss, however, misses what happened during the session.

SMH entered Thursday after breaking below its 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level. It then opened beneath the midpoint of a parallel channel, extending the selling pressure that had developed over several sessions.

For roughly the first 30 minutes, sellers remained in control.

Then the pattern changed.

Rather than forming another bear flag followed by renewed selling, SMH recovered and finished near the upper end of its daily range. The bounce brought price back toward the 50% line of its parallel channel.

This was a meaningful change of character, but not yet a confirmed bullish reversal.

The important question is whether SMH can reclaim that channel midpoint on a closing basis. If buyers accomplish that, the upper boundary near \$597.69 becomes the next potential upside target.

If the midpoint continues to act as resistance, Thursday's recovery may prove to be a temporary bounce within the existing decline.

Drew's approach here is particularly useful. A strong intraday recovery deserves attention, but the chart still needs to confirm that the underlying structure has improved before traders assume the trend has changed.

Micron Stock Rebounds After Filling a Technical Gap

Micron Technology (MU) provided a related example of buyers responding to an established technical level.

Following six consecutive declining sessions, Micron traded near \$860 and filled a gap around \$868.52 before recovering into positive territory.

That rebound suggests buyers were willing to respond near the gap-fill area, particularly after the stock had experienced substantial selling pressure.

However, Micron recently broke below an ascending parallel channel. That breakdown leaves overhead resistance that could limit the recovery.

Drew identified the \$1,035 to \$1,070 region as a potential retest zone if the rebound continues. A move into that area would provide an opportunity to evaluate whether former support has become resistance.

The important point is not to assume that one positive session has repaired the chart.

Micron has demonstrated that buyers are still present, but the larger technical structure requires additional work. Waiting for a cleaner test of resistance may offer more information than chasing the first bounce.

Natural Gas and Oil: Why Risk Management Matters More Than Momentum

Energy markets presented a different set of technical conditions, particularly in natural gas.

U.S. oil continued pushing higher, with Drew identifying \$102.81 as the next potential resistance area. That level corresponds with the midpoint of a parallel channel and provides a logical location to monitor for a reaction if the advance continues.

Natural gas, however, offered a more immediate lesson in risk management.

The commodity recently reached the lower boundary of its parallel channel and has since advanced sharply. Its daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) moved above 70, placing momentum in overbought territory.

The breakout carries a measured-move objective near \$3.89, but an upside target does not automatically make the current price an attractive entry.

Drew was particularly direct about the risk:

"Nat Gas is a widow maker. It can whip up as much as it can whip down on charts. So whatever you do, just go light, be careful…"

That warning reflects the speed and volatility that can characterize natural gas trading. Strong momentum can continue longer than expected, but sharp reversals can also erase gains quickly.

Rather than chase the advance, Drew identified a declining trend line near \$3.26 as a potential pullback area worth watching.

A retreat toward that level would not guarantee a successful trade. It would, however, allow traders to reassess the setup closer to a defined technical reference, where entry, invalidation, and position size can be evaluated more deliberately.

The broader lesson applies well beyond natural gas. Recognizing an opportunity and finding a favorable entry are two different decisions.

Gold and Silver Technical Analysis: Bond Yields Offer Relief, but Risks Remain

The decline in Treasury yields also coincided with a recovery in gold.

Gold bounced from technical support as yields weakened, but its broader chart continues to show a bearish consolidation structure. The bounce is constructive in the short term without necessarily changing that larger outlook.

If Treasury yields resume climbing and gold loses support, the \$3,900 area remains a potential downside objective.

Silver, meanwhile, continues to display relative weakness compared with gold.

The metal has struggled to recover its previous consolidation range and faces resistance around the midpoint of a long-term parallel channel extending back to February 2008.

Drew also highlighted an active head and shoulders pattern with a measured-move objective near \$53.26.

That target sits close to a broader \$50 to \$53.26 area where traders may begin watching for a stronger buying response. However, potential support should not be confused with confirmation that a bottom has formed.

For both metals, the next reaction at support or resistance will carry more weight than an attempt to anticipate the exact turning point.

Bitcoin Price Outlook: Repeated Support Tests Raise Breakdown Risk

Bitcoin finished Thursday approximately 0.87% higher, but the daily gain did little to resolve the larger technical concern.

The cryptocurrency has broken its shorter-term uptrend and continues consolidating close to a major horizontal support line associated with a November 2025 pivot low.

That support remains important. As long as Bitcoin holds above it, the larger breakdown scenario has not been confirmed.

The concern is how frequently price has returned to the same area without producing a sustained advance.

As Drew explained:

"The more you knock on the door, the more likely someone's going to open and price can just collapse down underneath."

Repeated tests can indicate that buyers are defending a level, but they can also suggest that demand is being absorbed. The longer Bitcoin remains pressed against support, the more important the next decisive move becomes.

A recovery toward \$86,000 would help demonstrate that buyers can create meaningful separation from the support zone.

Conversely, a confirmed break below the horizontal level would weaken the current structure and increase the risk of additional selling.

For now, Bitcoin is a market where confirmation matters more than anticipation. The chart has not yet resolved the tension between support holding and buying momentum fading.

Ericsson, Zillow and Nike: Three Stock Setups Built Around Technical Levels

Beyond the major indexes and commodities, Drew highlighted several individual stocks where price was interacting with longer-term technical structures.

These setups share a common principle: the location of price relative to support and resistance matters more than whether a company is currently popular with investors.

Ericsson Stock: Earnings Strength Meets a Multiyear Channel

Ericsson reported earnings above expectations, with earnings per share beating estimates by approximately 22% and revenue exceeding forecasts by 6.8%.

The stronger results helped support a move from the lower boundary of a parallel channel that has been developing since April 2024.

The channel matters because it provides a historical reference for where buyers have previously responded.

If Ericsson maintains its recovery and establishes further strength above Thursday's candle, a pullback toward nearby trendline support could offer a new technical area to evaluate.

The initial upside references are \$10.84 and \$11, followed by the midpoint of the longer-term channel.

A failure to maintain the recovery would weaken the immediate bullish case, making the next support test important.

Zillow Stock: Lower Treasury Yields Support a Technical Bounce

Zillow is another name worth watching because of its sensitivity to interest rates and housing-market expectations.

The decline in Treasury yields provided a more favorable backdrop for rate-sensitive stocks, while Zillow's chart showed a breakout, retracement, and bounce sequence.

Drew identified \$36.52 as an important nearby level, with a longer-term trend line connecting the March 2020 and October 2022 lows adding technical significance to the area.

A sustained recovery through resistance would strengthen the argument that Zillow's larger trend is improving.

With earnings expected in early November, traders also need to account for the possibility of additional volatility around that catalyst.

The technical setup may be constructive, but an upcoming earnings report can materially change the risk profile.

Nike Stock: A Channel Recovery Creates a Defined Technical Test

Nike provided one of the session's more interesting examples of separating a company's fundamental challenges from the technical opportunity on its chart.

After declining toward \$32.14 and moving below the lower boundary of a parallel channel dating back to September 2022, Nike recovered into that channel.

The \$34.17 area now serves as an important technical reference.

Drew's approach was not based on whether Nike is an attractive brand or whether its longer-term business challenges have been resolved.

As he explained:

"I don't need to buy my favorite company or avoid my least favorite company. I just need to see if there's a good trading opportunity."

That distinction is central to technical trading. A stock can present a tradable recovery even while its fundamental outlook remains uncertain.

For Nike, the initial upside resistance sits near \$40, followed by a Fibonacci retracement level around \$43.34 and a more significant technical reference at \$46.16.

Those levels provide a framework for evaluating the recovery. They are not guaranteed destinations, and the setup would weaken if Nike loses its reclaimed channel support.

What Traders Should Watch After the October 15 Market Reversal

Thursday's session improved the near-term technical picture, but several important questions remain unresolved.

The 10-year Treasury yield is the first area to monitor. Continued weakness toward 5.021% would support the current reversal thesis and could provide a more favorable backdrop for rate-sensitive equities. A sharp rebound in yields would challenge that interpretation.

For the broader equity market, SPY needs to maintain support around \$766.17 and eventually clear \$781 to strengthen the bullish case. QQQ must also hold its reclaimed breakout structure if the inverse head and shoulders setup is to remain relevant.

Semiconductors may offer the clearest confirmation signal. SMH's intraday recovery was encouraging, but a close above the midpoint of its parallel channel would provide stronger evidence that buyers are regaining control.

Outside equities, Bitcoin remains vulnerable while it consolidates near major support, and natural gas demonstrates why a strong chart does not necessarily justify an immediate entry.

These are different markets with different technical conditions, but the decision-making process remains consistent: identify the important level, wait for the market's reaction, and reassess when the evidence changes.

Respect the Recovery, but Don’t Assume Confirmation

October 15 was not simply a session when stocks recovered from an inflation scare.

The more important development was the divergence between the economic headline and the technical response. Treasury yields declined despite hotter PPI data, major indexes defended support, and semiconductors recovered from aggressive early selling.

Those developments suggest that selling pressure may be easing in parts of the market. They do not establish that a new bullish trend has begun.

For Drew, the practical takeaway is to respect the recovery without getting ahead of the confirmation.

The next session will help determine whether Thursday marked the beginning of a more durable shift or another temporary rebound within an unsettled market.

The opportunity is not in predicting that outcome with certainty. It is in knowing which levels will help distinguish one scenario from the other.
