Tech's Failed Bounce Puts Meta, Tesla and AI Stock Support Levels in Focus

Friday's session delivered a sharp, broad-based sell-off in technology. The XLK tech ETF and the SMH semiconductor ETF both saw heavy selling as capital moved quickly out of the AI trade, and the VIX jumped more than twenty percent. With yields coming in, Jake Sweeney read the options market as pricing in a relief bounce for the S&P 500 on Monday, October 19.

The bounce arrived, but it did not hold. Stocks pushed higher at the open and then rolled over again through the afternoon. That behavior matters more than Friday's headline move. A rebound that fades the same day it starts suggests the selling pressure has not yet worked itself out.

The practical takeaway: when a relief bounce fails, chasing strength is a low-probability trade. The better opportunities sit lower, at levels where multiple technical factors converge. Even the stronger charts are approaching areas where sellers could reappear.

Meta (META) Stock Fails to Reclaim Broken Trend Line Resistance

A healthy recovery after a sharp sell-off usually includes a retracement back toward the broken level. Meta Platforms (META) showed the opposite. Price broke well below an upsloping trend line on Friday and closed near $709. On Monday, it did not attempt to retest that trend line from below. Instead, it trended lower, reaching roughly $693 before a modest bounce into the low $700s late in the session.

Meta's inability to retest its broken trend line near $720–$725, which also lines up with prior pivots, leaves that area as the first major resistance test. A reclaim would weaken the bearish near-term read, while continued trading below it keeps the lower support levels in focus.

AI Stock Support Levels: META, ALAB, IONQ and APLD

The most useful levels are not single lines on a chart. They are zones where several independent factors overlap: a prior pivot, a trend line, a gap fill, a round number. Confluence like this makes a technical level more meaningful and gives traders a clearer area to watch for a reaction.

Meta. The first major level is $681. For weeks, that price acted as a ceiling, with repeated attempts to break above it. Once price cleared it, that former resistance became a candidate for support, a classic polarity shift. Below that, a gap fill near $665.75 lines up with a downsloping trend line. A sharp pierce into that zone followed by a quick rejection would favor a bounce.

Astera Labs (ALAB). Semiconductors bounced early Monday before fading to flat. A gap and pivot top near $272.27 is a minor first level, but the stronger setup sits lower. A pivot top near $262.90 converges with an ascending trend line around $264, a line with only about four touches so far. Below that, a gap fill near $252.54 adds a third layer. The discipline here is waiting for price to visit the trend line rather than anticipating it.

IonQ (IONQ). This name has already confirmed a breakdown from an ascending trend line dating back to November 5, 2024. Monday's initial bounce faded into another decline of about two percent. Near term, the Thursday pivot low near $30.07 and the $30 round number are the line in the sand, with a small gap near $29.82 just beneath. On a swing basis, the more compelling zone is lower: a gap fill near $26.59 from March 30, 2026, a swing low pivot near $25.92, and prior pivot tops from years back in the $25–$26 range. That overlap makes the $25.92–$26.59 region one of the more compelling swing-long areas if the decline continues. A reaction at that zone would help determine whether buyers are prepared to defend it.

Applied Digital (APLD). After its own heavy sell-off Friday, APLD rallied roughly 11.5 percent above Friday's close at Monday's high before stalling at a prior low wick near the $20 handle, then began fading. Holding above $19.01 would help preserve Monday's recovery attempt, while a close below that level puts support near $17.60, where price found buyers on Friday, back in focus. If APLD can reclaim $20, the next resistance sits at the $22.44 gap fill, followed by the broken trend line around $24.38–$24.50.

Tesla (TSLA) Stock Approaches Key Resistance Ahead of Earnings

Tesla (TSLA) offers the contrast. After surging into Friday and then selling off, it closed just above a key bar near $353.80 and traded up about three and a half percent on Monday. The company reports third-quarter results after the close on Wednesday, October 21.

The question is not whether Tesla is strong, but where that strength meets supply. The first level is $375, where a gap fill aligns with prior pivots, a near-term day-trade level. Above that, pivot resistance at $386.69 is more significant, followed by a gap fill at $391.06. The level that matters most is a descending trend line converging near $392–$393. The descending trend line dates back to early July and has rejected price on roughly seven occasions, giving it more technical weight than the nearby gap-fill levels. Even a sharp move higher would need to clear that line before the broader structure improves.

Defense Stocks NOC and RTX Test Critical Technical Levels

Friday's spike in volatility pushed capital into defense names. Northrop Grumman (NOC) and RTX both surged, but on Monday that move did not see follow-through.

NOC remains capped by a downsloping trend line from March 3, 2026, with six touches so far. The broader structure is a downsloping wedge, which typically carries a bullish bias. If weakness develops, the pivot top near $498.82 is the first expected bounce area, followed by a gap fill near $456.30 and the lower wedge boundary near $434.20, a potential swing-long zone. RTX is testing a convergence of horizontal resistance at $193.46 and an ascending trend line from April 22, 2025. A daily close above that area puts $198.36 in view next.

Key Stock Support and Resistance Levels to Watch

Stock Level Significance
META $720–$725 Broken trend line / first resistance test
META $681 Former resistance, now key support
TSLA ~$392–$393 Descending trend line, roughly seven rejections
ALAB ~$262.90–$264 Pivot top + ascending trend line
IONQ ~$25.92–$26.59 Swing-long confluence zone
APLD $19.01 Daily close pivot
RTX $193.46 Horizontal and trend line convergence

Tech Stock Outlook: What Could Confirm the Next Market Move?

The first signal is whether the broader market can produce a bounce that holds through the close rather than fading intraday. For individual names, confirmation comes from reclaiming broken levels, such as Meta above $720–$725 or APLD above $20. Invalidation of the support zones comes from decisive closes through them rather than brief pierces and rejections. For Tesla, Wednesday's earnings add another catalyst to watch as price approaches the $392–$393 trend line.

The common thread across these charts is patience. With the broader bounce struggling, the focus is on letting price reach stronger support zones rather than chasing rebounds, while recognizing that even the relatively stronger names face meaningful resistance overhead.
