S&P 500 Recovers, but NASDAQ Resistance and Semiconductor Stocks Hold the Key

Trading the Close Market Review | October 27, 2026

The stock market's recovery is gaining momentum, but the charts are not yet delivering the same bullish message. The S&P 500 has reclaimed an important trend line, the NASDAQ is approaching resistance that previously rejected its breakout, and semiconductor stocks are attempting to recover from oversold conditions. Together, these developments create a market where the next confirmation matters more than the strength of the latest rally.

In the October 27 edition of Trading the Close, Verified Investing Pro Trader Drew Dosek examined the technical levels shaping the next potential move. With major technology earnings and the Federal Reserve's next policy announcement approaching, his focus was on whether buyers could defend recovered support and push through resistance. The market has improved technically, but the difference between a recovery and a confirmed breakout remains important.

S&P 500 Reclaims Support While NASDAQ Faces Resistance at 26,554

The S&P 500 has delivered an important technical recovery over the past two sessions. After threatening to break below a rising trend line originating from the June low pivot, the index reversed higher and reclaimed that support. What initially looked like a potential breakdown has shifted back toward a bullish structure, reducing the immediate downside pressure.

That recovery matters because failed breakdowns can change trader positioning quickly. Sellers who entered expecting continued weakness may reconsider their positions when price moves back above a previously broken level. At the same time, buyers see evidence that demand remains active. The key now is whether the S&P 500 can hold its reclaimed trend line rather than slipping back below it.

The NASDAQ presents a different picture. Despite participating in the recovery, the index remains below a declining trend line drawn from its June 1 pivot high. That trend line previously marked a breakout area that failed, making the current retest particularly important. The index has also interacted with the upper boundary of an older parallel channel, adding another layer to the resistance structure.

Drew identified 26,554 as the key NASDAQ level to watch. A sustained move above that resistance would strengthen the bullish case and open the possibility of a retest of the rising trend line connecting the March and July low pivots. A rejection, however, would leave the recent advance looking more like a recovery within an unresolved technical structure. With major earnings approaching, traders have a clear level against which to evaluate the next move.

Semiconductor ETF SMH Tests a Recovery Toward \$568.04

The semiconductor sector may provide an important confirmation signal for the broader market. Technology stocks have helped drive the recovery, but the strength of that move becomes more convincing when semiconductor stocks participate and sustain their advances.

Drew focused on the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), which recently declined into a significant technical support area. The daily Relative Strength Index approached 30, placing momentum near traditionally oversold territory. At the same time, price reached the lower portion of a long-term parallel channel originating around the April 2025 lows. A previously broken declining trend line added another structural reference point near the support region.

This combination helps explain why buyers appeared near that area. The channel boundary provided a historical support reference, while the oversold RSI suggested that downside momentum had become extended. Neither factor guarantees a reversal, but their alignment made the region more significant than an isolated support level.

SMH is now attempting to build on its recovery, with \$568.04 marking the next important resistance area near the channel's midpoint. The advance does not need to occur in a straight line. A pullback or consolidation would not automatically invalidate the recovery, provided the underlying support structure remains intact.

The broader implication is straightforward. If SMH continues higher and eventually challenges \$568.04 while the NASDAQ clears 26,554, the two markets would provide stronger confirmation of the technology-led advance. If semiconductors stall and the NASDAQ rejects resistance, the rally would deserve a more cautious interpretation.

Boeing Stock: Earnings Selloff Puts \$157.47 Support in Focus

Earnings volatility is creating opportunities to evaluate longer-term technical levels, but sharp declines also demand patience. Boeing (BA) illustrated that point as the stock experienced significant selling pressure around its earnings announcement, trading below \$170 during the session and reaching approximately \$167.90 in after-hours activity, according to the original market recap.

Rather than treating the decline as an automatic buying opportunity, Drew examined Boeing's weekly chart. A long-term parallel channel extending from the COVID-era lows identifies a lower boundary near \$157.47, providing a potential support reference if the selloff continues.

The weekly RSI was also reported near 29.34, indicating oversold momentum on a longer timeframe. That reading increases the relevance of watching for a reaction, but it does not establish that a bottom has formed. Stocks can remain oversold while continuing lower, particularly when earnings materially change market expectations.

A move toward or below \$160 would bring Boeing closer to the channel support area. From there, traders can assess whether price stabilizes, whether buyers begin defending the region, and whether a reversal develops. If a meaningful recovery takes hold, \$189 becomes a potential overhead reference. Until then, the support zone is an area to monitor rather than a confirmed turning point.

SOFI and Alphabet Stock: Earnings Setups Defined by Resistance and Support

Not every earnings reaction is producing the same technical picture. SoFi Technologies (SOFI) showed how a positive catalyst can reinforce an existing support structure. After spending approximately two weeks near the lower boundary of a parallel channel, the stock moved sharply higher following its earnings release and filled an overhead price gap.

The recovery suggests that buyers successfully defended an area that had been tested repeatedly. However, the gap fill also creates a natural point to reassess momentum rather than assume the advance will continue unchecked. Drew identified \$19.23 as the next significant resistance level, based on a trend line connecting the April and July 2026 pivot highs. A sustained move through that area would strengthen the bullish structure, while a rejection would leave traders watching whether the recent breakout can hold.

Alphabet (GOOGL) presents a different setup heading into its earnings announcement. The stock has been trading within a rising parallel channel dating back to November 2024, giving traders defined reference points on both sides of the current price.

If earnings trigger a decline, the lower channel boundary near \$304.63 sits close to an unfilled gap at \$305.46. That overlap creates a potential support zone around \$304 to \$305, where traders can watch for stabilization or a reversal. The confluence makes the area technically significant, but a strong earnings-driven selloff could still push through it.

On the upside, Alphabet must overcome a rising resistance trend line connecting the March and September pivots. The value of this setup lies in having the relevant levels identified before the earnings reaction, rather than trying to interpret every price swing after the announcement.

Seagate Stock: Fibonacci Support Levels After Earnings Volatility

Seagate Technology (STX) offers another example of why earnings reactions should be evaluated against the larger chart structure. Following a reported decline from approximately \$667 to \$623.84, the stock faces several technical reference points if selling continues.

The first notable downside area is an open gap near \$579.03. Below that, Drew identified the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement at \$521.24 as a deeper potential support level. The stock has previously reacted around several Fibonacci retracements, including the 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, and 61.8% levels.

Those prior reactions make the retracement structure useful for identifying areas where traders may reassess positioning. They do not, however, make a move to the next Fibonacci level inevitable. If the 61.8% retracement fails to hold, the 78.6% level becomes a more relevant downside reference, particularly if the broader technology sector also weakens.

For traders, the important question is not simply which Fibonacci level comes next. It is whether price begins showing evidence of support when it reaches that area. The difference between identifying a potential support zone and confirming a reversal remains central to the setup.

Federal Reserve Decision and 10-Year Treasury Yield: What Markets Are Watching

The upcoming Federal Reserve announcement introduces another potential catalyst at a time when equity indices are testing important technical levels. The market's reaction may depend less on the policy decision alone and more on how the Fed communicates its outlook for inflation, growth, and future interest rates.

Drew's analysis of the 10-year Treasury yield adds context to that uncertainty. The yield chart is developing a potential bear flag near a former resistance area from September that has since become support. That overlap creates a technically important region where yields may consolidate ahead of new information.

A confirmed breakdown from the pattern would suggest additional downside potential for yields, while a recovery through the pattern's resistance would weaken the bearish interpretation. Either outcome could influence how traders assess equity valuations and interest-rate-sensitive sectors.

The key is to watch how yields respond to the Fed's communication and whether that response confirms or challenges the technical recovery already underway in stocks. The policy announcement is a catalyst, but price action after the event will help determine whether the existing market structure holds.

Crude Oil and Natural Gas: Energy Resistance Levels to Watch

Energy markets remain another important part of the broader macro picture. Crude oil declined approximately 1% during the session discussed in the recap, but the larger technical structure continues to deserve attention.

Drew highlighted \$103.49 as a significant declining trend line resistance level for U.S. crude oil. A sustained breakout above that line could strengthen a developing bullish pattern and bring a larger measured-move projection into focus. The chart suggests a possible extension toward \$148 to \$149, although that remains a conditional technical objective rather than a forecast of where oil must trade.

Such a move, if it developed, could complicate the inflation outlook and influence expectations for interest rates. That makes crude oil relevant beyond the energy sector itself. For now, however, the important signal is whether price can clear resistance and maintain the breakout.

Natural gas is also attempting to recover from a recent low. Its key upside reference is a declining trend line near \$3.19, drawn from the March 2026 pivot. A sustained move above that level would strengthen the near-term recovery case, while continued rejection would leave the bearish structure unresolved.

Gold and Silver Prices: Oversold Conditions Create Bounce Setups

Precious metals are offering a different type of opportunity, with gold and silver attempting to recover after recent weakness. In both cases, the focus is on whether buyers can build on their initial response rather than assuming that oversold conditions guarantee a sustained advance.

Gold has rebounded after trading through several previously identified downside reference points around \$4,000, \$3,950, and \$3,900. With that reaction underway, Drew identified \$4,104 as an important upside resistance level. The area previously acted as support during a period of consolidation, making it a logical place to watch for renewed selling pressure.

Silver has developed a similar near-term recovery setup. Recent daily candles have shown lower wicks near \$53.26, suggesting that buyers have been responding to declines into that region. The level also aligns with a measured-move objective from a prior head and shoulders pattern, giving it additional technical significance.

With the daily RSI near 34, silver is approaching oversold momentum conditions. A continued recovery could bring \$59.10 into focus as the next upside resistance area. However, the larger chart still leaves room for additional weakness, including a potential move toward \$50 if support fails. The near-term bounce and the longer-term downside risk can coexist, which is why confirmation and time frame matter.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: \$80,588 Support Defines the Near-Term Setup

Bitcoin is approaching one of the more important technical decisions in the current market. Like the NASDAQ, it is attempting to maintain a recovered level while the broader risk-asset environment remains uncertain.

Drew identified \$80,588 as the key daily support reference, with a closely aligned weekly level near \$80,580. The area matters because it helps distinguish an intact bullish recovery from a failed breakout.

An intraday move below support would not carry the same significance as a confirmed daily close beneath it. If Bitcoin continues to defend the region on a closing basis, the bullish structure remains viable, with \$86,700 as the next upside reference. Beyond that, a move through \$90,000 could bring a previous neckline into focus.

A sustained breakdown below the \$80,580 to \$80,588 area would weaken the near-term bullish thesis and shift attention toward support around \$75,000. The setup therefore offers a clear technical framework without requiring traders to predict the outcome in advance.

Bitcoin's behavior also provides a useful comparison with technology stocks. If both markets defend support and begin clearing overhead resistance, the recovery across risk assets would gain credibility. If they fail together, it would suggest that the recent rebound has not yet resolved the broader technical weakness.

Stock Market Outlook: Confirmation Matters More Than the Rally

The October 27 market recovery has improved the technical picture, but several important tests remain unresolved. The S&P 500 has reclaimed support, the NASDAQ still needs to clear 26,554, and semiconductor stocks are working toward resistance near \$568.04. Those three developments provide the clearest framework for evaluating whether the latest advance has room to continue.

Earnings reactions in Boeing, SOFI, Alphabet, and Seagate reinforce the same lesson. Strong moves can bring prices quickly into important technical zones, but reaching a level is not the same as confirming a trade setup. Support must hold, resistance must be cleared, and price action must support the thesis.

With the Federal Reserve announcement and additional corporate earnings approaching, traders have several catalysts capable of testing these structures. Drew's approach is to identify the levels in advance, recognize what would strengthen or invalidate a setup, and avoid treating every market reaction as a new trend.

The bottom line: The bulls have improved their position, but the market still needs confirmation. The NASDAQ and semiconductor sector are the clearest places to look for that evidence. Until those resistance levels are resolved, the recovery deserves attention without assuming that the next breakout is already secured.
