My Trading Game Plan Revealed - 07/20/2026: S&P 500 Wedge, Apple Short, Semis Bounce and Oil Fade
The S&P 500 Wedge Is Forcing a Decision as Earnings Take Control
An earnings-heavy week is beginning with the S&P 500 compressed inside a tightening technical structure, semiconductor stocks testing support, and several headline-driven moves beginning to lose momentum. The individual charts are different, but Gareth Soloway’s central framework from this morning’s My Trading Game Plan was consistent across each one: separate the emotional narrative from the level that actually defines the trade.
That approach becomes especially important during a week when corporate earnings, geopolitical developments, and rapid sector rotations can pull traders in several directions at once. Rather than predicting every outcome, Gareth focused on the chart structures that would confirm whether recent weakness is stabilizing or beginning to accelerate.
“We rely on the charts to basically give us probability, which puts us in a position to not win every time, because I certainly don’t, but at least it makes us into the casino versus the gambler,” Gareth explained. That distinction framed the session. The market does not need to become predictable. Traders need clearly defined levels that tell them when the probability has changed.
The S&P 500 Wedge Defines the Broader Market
The most important chart of the session was the S&P 500. After two consecutive down days last week and a roughly 1% decline on Friday, futures bounced modestly Monday morning. That recovery offered some relief, but it did not resolve the larger structure forming on the daily chart.
The index remains compressed inside a developing wedge, with descending resistance connecting the June 2 all-time high to a series of lower highs. The lower boundary is rising beneath price, leaving the market with progressively less room to move. That compression matters more than the morning bounce because the eventual break could establish the next directional phase.
A breakout through the upper trendline would shift the structure back in favor of buyers and open a measured move toward approximately 7,700. Continued strength could eventually bring 8,000 into view, although the first confirmation would be a sustained move beyond the wedge rather than an immediate projection toward the furthest target.
The downside level carries equal weight. A break beneath the wedge’s rising support would expose the former all-time-high region near 7,000, an area established across late 2025 and early 2026. Because the wedge is visible across multiple time frames, a confirmed breakdown could draw additional systematic selling and increase the speed of the decline.
“If we come down to this trendline and break, it’s going to open up the floodgates,” Gareth said. “The algorithms are going to begin to sell, and we should see a very sharp drop to our former all-time highs going back to early 2026 and late 2025, and that would be around 7,000.”
The chart is therefore forcing a decision. A modest bounce inside the wedge does not change the broader read. Price must clear descending resistance or lose rising support before the market provides meaningful directional confirmation.
Apple and Semiconductors Are Trading Opposite Sides of the Rotation
Beneath the index, one of the clearest internal market signals is the rotation between Apple and the semiconductor group. Gareth described the relationship as “yin and yang.” Weakness in semiconductors has pushed capital toward Apple, while rebounds in chip stocks have tended to reduce demand for Apple as the perceived defensive technology trade.
That rotation has contributed to an extraordinary three-week move in Apple, adding roughly $1 trillion in market capitalization. The fundamental narrative is that Apple avoided the aggressive artificial-intelligence infrastructure spending undertaken by several semiconductor and cloud-computing companies. The chart, however, shows a move that has become increasingly vertical.
Gareth is positioned for an Apple pullback toward $315, where a former pivot high aligns with a significant gap fill. The thesis is not based only on Apple being extended. It also depends on whether semiconductor stocks can stabilize and attract capital back into the group. A stronger semiconductor bounce would remove part of the relative-demand advantage that has helped drive Apple higher.
Several semiconductor charts are beginning to test the levels needed for that rotation. Marvell Technology is bouncing from an important support area near $195, where a gap fill converges with a prior high pivot. Holding that zone leaves room for a recovery toward approximately $220 to $225.
Micron is showing a similar structure. The stock has started to stabilize after testing support slightly above $800, with a prior high pivot and secondary gap fill reinforcing the area. These supports do not automatically call for new all-time highs. They create the conditions for a mean-reversion bounce after a severe corrective move.
That is the more important interpretation. Apple’s extension and semiconductor support are not isolated setups. They are connected through the market’s recent capital rotation. Confirmation in one group could directly influence the probability of the setup in the other.
Sandisk Shows the Risk of Chasing Analyst Exuberance
Sandisk provided the session’s clearest example of how sentiment can become detached from technical risk. The stock has fallen approximately $1,000 from its recent high after one of the market’s most aggressive momentum runs.
As Sandisk climbed 100%, 200%, and eventually 300% on the year, analyst targets moved sharply higher, with some reaching $3,000 to $3,500. Those upgrades appeared after much of the move had already occurred, making them less useful as forward-looking analysis and more revealing as a measure of sentiment.
“Analysts, unfortunately, are human, and therefore they fall into the emotional trap,” Gareth said. “They get emotional about it, just like many of us do, and they throw out these ridiculous price targets, but it’s a topping signal.”
The lesson is not that every analyst upgrade marks an exact top. The signal comes from the combination of a historic price extension and increasingly aggressive targets arriving after the market has already repriced the stock. At that stage, the upgrades can confirm that optimism has become crowded rather than identify a new source of upside.
Sandisk has not yet reached the strongest support area on Gareth’s chart. A potential level begins to form near $1,200, although the structure would be cleaner if price first bounced and then rolled back toward that zone. That sequence would provide more information about whether sellers remain in control and whether support is attracting meaningful demand.
Oil’s Reversal Shows Why Levels Matter More Than Headlines
Crude oil offered another example of price refusing to follow the most emotionally compelling narrative. Escalating tensions involving the United States and Iran sent oil close to $85 per barrel overnight. Instead of extending higher, crude surrendered the move, briefly turned negative, and later recovered toward unchanged levels.
The reversal did not make the geopolitical risk irrelevant. It showed that the initial news-driven buying was insufficient to sustain a breakout. For Gareth, the stronger opportunity would come only if oil reaches the established resistance area near $87.
That level represents what Gareth calls the “scene of the crime.” Oil previously used the area as support during an earlier advance, testing it several times before eventually breaking below it. Once support fails, the same level can become resistance when price returns from underneath.
The important point is not that $87 guarantees a rejection. It is that the level provides a more defined probability setup than chasing an overnight move driven by escalating headlines. Until crude reaches that area, price remains vulnerable to the type of volatility and reversal seen during Monday’s session.
This is where patience becomes part of the analysis. Headline volatility creates urgency, but urgency does not create an edge. The edge appears when emotional price movement reaches a technically significant level and gives traders a structure against which the thesis can be judged.
Earnings Replace Economic Data as the Main Catalyst
The economic calendar is relatively light, with initial jobless claims on Thursday followed by purchasing managers’ index data and new-home sales on Friday. Corporate earnings will therefore carry more influence over individual stocks and could help determine which side of the S&P 500 wedge eventually breaks.
Wednesday is the heaviest session, with Tesla, Alphabet, ServiceNow, Texas Instruments, CSX, and IBM scheduled to report. Intel follows Thursday after the close, alongside several airline and defense-company reports.
IBM stands out because of the damage already reflected in its chart. The stock previously suffered a decline of more than 20% following a negative preannouncement. When a company reports after a move of that size, management sometimes uses the quarter to recognize multiple problems at once and reset expectations. The question is whether IBM signals that the worst of the deterioration has already been priced in.
That does not make the earnings result predictable. It changes the asymmetry. Expectations are far lower than they were before the original decline, and the stock is approaching technical support. A credible indication that conditions are stabilizing could produce a meaningful bounce, while another deterioration would test whether that support can absorb additional selling.
Earnings gaps can also create more precise intraday structures. Domino’s Pizza gapped higher Monday morning, placing a large gap-fill area near $367 to $368 into focus as possible resistance. AMC also opened higher following earnings, with a prior gap-fill area near $2.75 providing a level to watch if the initial rally continues.
The common thread is confirmation. A large earnings gap does not automatically establish the direction of the next move. The reaction becomes more useful when price reaches a prior pivot, gap fill, or other structure that reveals whether buyers or sellers are still willing to defend the move.
Gold, Silver, and Natural Gas Remain Under Pressure
Gold is holding near support around $3,900 after its recent decline. Losing that area would weaken the near-term structure and expose lower support zones, including the region between approximately $3,450 and $3,600. The exact path would depend on how price behaves at each intermediate level, but the chart remains vulnerable while buyers struggle to generate separation from $3,900.
The longer-term gold thesis remains separate from the current technical weakness. Verified Investing is preparing a Gold Institutional Report and interactive cycle calculator designed to examine how variables such as real interest rates and national debt may influence the next major cycle. That macro framework may remain constructive even while the short-term chart works through a deeper correction.
Silver is also showing mixed signals. It has repeatedly tested the area near $54 without producing a decisive breakdown, but the broader sequence of lower lows remains intact. The technical bias does not materially improve unless silver can eventually reclaim the larger resistance region between $63 and $64.
Natural gas may be the weakest of the commodity charts. Price is building a possible bear flag while sitting directly on support. Persistent pressure against the same floor can indicate that buyers are absorbing repeated tests without generating a meaningful bounce. A confirmed loss of that support would keep the bearish continuation structure intact.
Bitcoin Offers the Cleaner Bullish Structure
Bitcoin continues to look more constructive than the major commodity charts. Price is holding in the upper portion of its recent range while developing an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern.
The first level that matters is $65,000. A clean break above that resistance would confirm improving momentum and open a near-term move toward approximately $67,000. Beyond that, the full measured move from the inverse head-and-shoulders structure points toward the $71,000 to $72,000 region.
The setup remains conditional. An inverse head-and-shoulders pattern does not become actionable simply because the shape is visible. The neckline must break before the measured move gains technical validity. Until then, Bitcoin is building a bullish possibility rather than completing a bullish breakout.
Even so, its relative strength matters. While gold, silver, and natural gas continue to pressure support, Bitcoin is holding near resistance and attempting to complete a reversal pattern. That divergence makes the cryptocurrency one of the cleaner upside charts discussed during the session.
Yields and the Dollar Could Decide the Wedge
The final pieces of Gareth’s framework were the U.S. Dollar Index and the 10-year Treasury yield. Both remain capable of influencing whether the S&P 500 breaks its wedge higher or lower.
The Dollar Index is consolidating in a structure that increasingly resembles a bullish flag. A confirmed breakout would place approximately 103.40 in view as the next measured target. Dollar strength can tighten financial conditions and create pressure across commodities and other risk-sensitive assets, making the breakout level relevant beyond the currency market itself.
The 10-year Treasury yield is holding above 4.5%, with 4.7% acting as the more consequential threshold. A move through 4.7% would increase the pressure on equity valuations and could become the catalyst that pushes the S&P 500 through the lower boundary of its wedge.
That relationship completes the broader framework. Earnings will drive individual stocks, but yields and the dollar may determine whether those moves remain isolated or develop into a wider shift in risk appetite. The index is already compressed. A simultaneous breakout in yields or the dollar could provide the macro pressure needed to resolve that compression.
Bottom Line
The market is entering a catalyst-heavy week without a confirmed index direction. The S&P 500 remains inside a wedge, Apple is extended while semiconductor stocks test support, and several headline-driven moves are beginning to reverse near established technical levels.
The level that matters most is the boundary of the S&P 500 structure. A break above descending resistance would favor a move toward 7,700. A loss of rising support would expose the former all-time-high region near 7,000 and increase the risk of accelerated selling.
Until one side breaks, the better framework is not to predict the outcome. It is to recognize which individual charts are approaching decision points and wait for price to confirm the probability. That is how traders avoid becoming the gambler reacting to every headline and begin operating like the casino, with the level and the risk defined before the move arrives.
